Events Content Coordinator

About CEA

The Centre for Effective Altruism’s mission is to build and nurture a global community of people who are thinking carefully about the world’s biggest problems and taking impactful action to solve them.
To foster this community, we run conferences, support hundreds of local groups, and provide online resources and forums for discussion.

About this role

The CEA Events team is looking to hire someone to manage content (talks, workshops, meetups, etc.) for EA Global events. This is a fairly influential role that involves shaping conversations and directions in EA, and deciding which ideas are worth promoting.
This role combines both research and operations skills, and the successful candidate will be responsible for deciding what content we should run and ensuring that it happens smoothly.
We’re planning on running three or four EAGs in 2024: likely three in-person ones and perhaps one virtual one. One of the EAGs will have an x-risk theme, with 100% of the content being focused on x-risk. The other EAGs will likely have a 50% x-risk content focus, with 25% on meta and relevant skills, and 12.5% each on animal welfare and global health and wellbeing.
What would you do?
This role provides the unique opportunity to curate an entire weekend of content, platforming new or exciting ideas related to Effective Altruism with high visibility. Your primary responsibility will be to scope, develop, and execute a comprehensive content plan for each event; working with the EA Global Project Manager (Isobel Phillips) to finalise the agenda and lock in speakers. Other responsibilities include:
  • Investigating new ideas and research that we should platform at EAG, ideally staying up-to-date on various cause areas.
  • Reaching out to cause-area experts and stakeholders to source content recommendations, and discerning whether to fit these into the content plan.
  • Handling the logistics and coordination once speakers are selected. This includes making sure that all their talk details are ready well in advance and loaded onto our event app. It also involves making sure speakers have their slides ready and are prepped for the day itself.
  • Ensuring that high quality recordings of talks are captured and uploaded to our YouTube channel in a timely manner.
  • Setting up and planning the organisation fair, as well as meetups and speed meetings.
  • Coordinating the speaker’s reception (a private dinner we host for speakers and other select guests).
Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate for the Events Content Coordinator role is:
  • Deeply interested in (and has nuanced opinions on) various EA cause areas — especially ones relating to x-risk.
  • Motivated by EA community building and x-risk cause areas.
  • Highly organised, with a strong attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple balls at once.
  • An excellent communicator who’s excited about providing a smooth and professional experience for our speakers.
  • Someone who can stay calm under pressure or uncertainty — our events often have rapid or unexpected changes at the last minute!
