The Centre for Effective Altruism’s mission is to build and nurture a global community of people who are thinking carefully about the world’s biggest problems and taking impactful action to solve them.
To foster this community, we run conferences, support hundreds of local groups, and provide online resources and forums for discussion.
About this role
We are looking for a full-time Groups Support Contractor to support EA groups around the world. You will provide support directly to organisers and contribute to systems in the Groups Team.
Background
CEA’s mission is to build a community of students and professionals acting on EA principles, by creating and sustaining high-quality discussion spaces. The Groups Team delivers on this mission by supporting more than 300 EA groups worldwide through advice, funding and other services. Your work would contribute to the effective functioning of several of these systems, as well as directly supporting organisers and colleagues.
The functioning and efficiency of our systems is vital to providing support at a large scale, and helps to unblock hundreds of dedicated organisers (e.g. through evaluating and processing their funding requests timely). Furthermore, moderating and curating channels that are accessible anywhere (e.g., the Groups Newsletter and EA Groups Slack) allows organizers from all over the world to act on opportunities. In addition, your support of colleagues, organisers and other stakeholders would put a multiplier on their time and helps them pursue their goals (e.g. by sharing group organiser data with recruiters who are hiring).
See our team values to learn more about working at CEA.
About the role
The role includes:
Supporting on funding requests. You pre-screen and process Group Support Funding and Rapid Funding applications for all groups. You check in with the team member responsible for making a decision, correspond with organisers when more information is needed and communicate funding decisions to organizers.
Asynchronous support for organisers. You handle incoming inquiries to the Groups Team inbox, and forward those to the relevant team member or respond as needed. You are also the admin and moderator for the EA Groups Slack and the EA Group Organisers Facebook group.
Managing and improving systems. You work with our team assistant to manage group information on our CRM in Salesforce. You are responsible for keeping group information up-to-date, such as through administering the Groups Census, logging certification decisions and importing data to Salesforce. You share information and insights from our database with colleagues or organisations as needed.
Writing the EA Groups Newsletter to share priority opportunities and resources with group organisers
Technical support. You work with our team assistant to provide technical support to groups, such as buying website domains, setting up Google Workspaces and managing the Groups Team Canva.
Additional responsibilities, depending on the strength of the candidates, e.g., advice calls with organisers.
Who is suited for this role?
We are looking for people who:
Have excellent communication skills. You respond to requests from organizers, colleagues and other stakeholders in a respectful, adequate and timely manner.
Have a strong service mindset. You are excited to support organizers and colleagues in a variety of ways and have a strong can-do attitude.
Are skilled at prioritising among competing goals. You are able to clarify competing goals and tasks, prioritise among them, and execute autonomously towards your highest priorities.
Have affinity with operations. You have attention to detail, a systems mindset, good computer skills, and are excited to develop your operational skills.
Are mission-driven. You are passionate about the goals of CEA.
Preferred, but not required:
Have experience running an EA group or another community building project. You are familiar with models of community building, strategy and relevant resources.
You have affinity with tech and/or data. You have experience with data processing and/or Salesforce.
