The Centre for Effective Altruism’s mission is to build and nurture a global community of people who are thinking carefully about the world’s biggest problems and taking impactful action to solve them.
To foster this community, we run conferences, support hundreds of local groups, and provide online resources and forums for discussion.
About this role
Please note, this role is an expression of interest so we may be slow to process submissions.
The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) is looking to hire a Recruiting Specialist to expand our in-house recruiting function and help us attract top talent.
The team is entering a new era as we take on a new CEO and begin the process of spinning out from Effective Ventures to become an independent organisation. We’re arguably the largest and primary organisation working on meta-level effective altruism; with around 40 staff, a budget over $30 million, and an established track record of delivering highly impactful programs. In addition to our pre-existing recruiting needs, our spin out will create increased demand as we move various operations functions in-house (such as finance, payroll, and legal).
This role and title (“specialist”) are targeted to someone with a moderate amount of professional experience in relevant domains, but we’re also open to hiring for a more junior version of this role, who would likely take on an associate title.
What would you do?
This role would involve supporting our recruiting efforts, with the potential to eventually build an in-house recruiting team to support us as we streamline and professionalise our organisation.
Your high-level responsibilities would include:
Managing hiring rounds: helping to launch and publicise various open roles, project managing the rounds themselves, and supporting hiring managers in evaluating candidates.
Outreach: help us source leads for roles, track talent, and do the necessary relationship building to help us find excellent candidates for hiring rounds.
Maintaining and improving our recruiting systems: we want to maintain and build world-class systems to track candidates and push forward hiring rounds as efficiently as possible.
They might also eventually include:
Strategic planning: you’ll be responsible for giving input to leadership to decide which hiring rounds to prioritise, and helping to enforce high quality hiring standards across the organisation.
As we build capacity, we can also imagine pivoting to support headhunting and recruiting more widely across high-impact roles in other organisations as well as our own.
About you
You might be a good fit for this role if you:
Are organised and excited by operational excellence: you enjoy managing projects in a fast-paced environment, and are comfortable in making tough decisions and trade-offs under tight time pressure.
Have strong people skills: you excel at building and maintaining professional relationships, and feel equipped to get candidates excited about working at CEA.
Enjoy designing and implementing systems: you feel excited about setting up and improving our recruiting flows, and have a knack for making systems robust, efficient, and intuitive.
Are able to take on a user focus: you will be working on a core function that services the rest of our staff and their recruiting needs, and you should feel ready to instill high standards and bring a customer service-focused attitude.
Have strong interpersonal skills and judgement: you feel comfortable talking to different types of people and feel able to judge when people are and aren’t good fits for certain roles.
We prefer candidates who also have:
An understanding of effective altruism and associated ideas: we expect the strongest candidates to be motivated by increasing their impact and helping others increase their impact.
Experience with recruiting or HR isn’t strictly required, though it’s certainly a plus. We’d be excited to take on a talented generalist who’s eager to get up to speed on our culture and learn on the job.
